Why Teaching Penmanship is Important

People often ask me why do I include copywork/handwriting pages with my books.  Well here are my top reasons, which also are good reasons why you should encourage your child to do copywork. 

• Science has confirmed a link between handwriting and both verbalization and creative thoughts.  Science has also shown that children who practice printing by hand have more advance and adult-like brain activity. 
• Handwriting also promotes visual memory and visual memory is essential for reading.  
• Handwriting promotes manipulation and finger isolation skills that are useful for other fine-motor activities (including use of technology).5
• With regards to specifically to cursive handwriting, cursive writing actually requires less carpal bone development than printing or even typing. Therefore, it is easier to remember and learn things we write in cursive than the things we type or print.  
• It improves several academic skills including spelling, grammar, and vocabulary.  
• Who doesn’t love a handwritten note?
